Pfizer has launched its biggest drug in the South African pharma sector after promising a deal to sell a generic version of its anti-impotence drug Viagra to the South African consumer.

The drug, which is now the bestselling medicine in the world’s most popular medicine, has been made by Pfizer for over 15 years, with sales of more than $100 billion a year.

Pfizer said yesterday it had launched a generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction drug by the trade group the Pharmaceuticals Association of South Africa (PSA).

The generic version is currently available in the market as a free generic Viagra.

The generic Viagra comes at a much lower price point, at just under $5.45.

Pfizer’s latest move, announced yesterday, was a result of a merger between Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Bristol-Myers drug and Novartis’s own generic Viagra.

Pfizer’s decision comes after a successful patent for Novartis’s impotence drug for $4.85 would be the market capitalisation of its company.

A spokesman for Bristol-Myers, Dr Mark Thompson, said: “The combination of the two companies has been very successful in developing the generic Viagra.

“We are pleased with the growth and expansion of the generic Viagra, with the company looking to get to the stage where it is an attractive product for the public and private sector.

“It will be the only medicine that Pfizer does not sell as a generic, and that is the intention of the group in the short- and long-term.

“Pfizer will supply Viagra to the South African consumer through its retail outlets.

“We believe that the product will prove to be very beneficial for those who have difficulties swallowing pills, and will improve the quality of life for patients.”

Pfizer had planned to launch the generic version of Viagra after the deal with Bristol-Myers was concluded, but the firm has now launched its own version.

The first-to-launch price of the drug, at $5.45, will come from a private company called Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The group has also partnered with the Sun pharma giant Bristol-Myers for a year.

The company said: “The launch of the branded version of the drug is a major achievement for Pfizer. It is one of the largest pharmaceuticals in South Africa and has been a huge success for the firm.”

In August, the US company Pfizer announced it would be selling its own generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug to South African consumer groups, including the consumer group PSA.

Pfizer will sell the generic version, which is now available as a free generic Viagra, to South African consumer groups through its retail outlets.

The company has also partnered with the PSA to produce and market its branded drug.

Pfizer’s new drug, Viagra, will be made by a private company called Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The company’s launch will be in partnership with Bristol-Myers, which sells Viagra on its website, and Bristol-Myers’s own drug, which was developed by Pfizer in the late 1980s and sold under the brand name Revatio.

The drug has been marketed by Bristol-Myers since 2003, and has become one of the country’s top selling medicines.

Pfizer’s Viagra sales rose to $2.85bn last year.

In a statement, Pfizer said: “We are delighted to introduce our new generic version of Viagra to South Africa, and we look forward to a successful launch for the firm in the future.

“Viagra is a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction and is used to improve the quality of life for men with impotence or erectile dysfunction. We have taken the opportunity to offer our own version of the erectile dysfunction drug, and it will be available to South Africans.

“We look forward to working closely with Pfizer to launch our new generic Viagra soon, and we look forward to sharing the results of our work with the world.

“We have been very fortunate to partner with many pharmaceutical companies in developing Viagra, and this is an opportunity to work with the industry to launch a new drug that will be of great benefit to the South African consumer.
